The Kenya Environmental Lawyers Association (KELA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with agencies to strengthen collaboration on environmental conservation, sustainable natural resource management, and climate justice in Kenya.

The agreement establishes a framework for joint efforts aligned with KELA’s mandate to promote environmental law, enhance policy and legal frameworks, support public interest litigation, and build capacity in environmental governance. Through the partnership, both parties aim to advance environmental governance and reinforce adherence to the rule of law, while supporting policy and legislative reforms for environmental protection.

The MoU outlines a shared commitment to strengthening institutional and professional capacity through training and knowledge exchange, as well as increasing public awareness of environmental rights and responsibilities. It also emphasizes the promotion of research and the dissemination of best practices, alongside initiatives targeting climate change mitigation and adaptation.

As part of the collaboration, the parties will undertake a range of joint activities, including organizing workshops, conferences, and training programmes, providing legal and technical advisory services, and carrying out joint research and publications. Community outreach and public sensitization initiatives will also form a key component of the partnership, with a focus on improving access to environmental justice and supporting the enforcement of environmental laws.

The implementation of the MoU will be guided by principles of mutual respect, transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and stakeholder participation. The parties have also committed to upholding sustainability and intergenerational equity, in line with the Constitution of Kenya and existing environmental legal frameworks.

To ensure effective coordination, each party will designate focal persons to oversee the implementation of agreed activities. Specific deliverables and timelines will be outlined in mutually agreed work plans, with each party expected to bear its own costs unless otherwise agreed in writing.

The partnership is expected to play a significant role in advancing environmental governance and promoting sustainable development in Kenya.
